Make A Bottle Lamp At Home

How do you make a bottle lamp at home?

Recycling old glass bottles into lamps has never been easier!

Did you know, you can make a bottle lamp at home with today’s bottle lamp kits? There is a kit for everything these days, lamp making is no exception. You can transform your favorite wine glass bottle or spirit container into an amazing and functioning work of art.

When we first started making bottle lamps with lights at home over ten years ago, the biggest obstacle to overcome was the glass drilling process. Armed with a corded electrical drill and a glass drilling bit, I slowly and methodically began the drilling process. There were heat issues, and yes. we lost a few bottles along the way. Once we had the hang of drilling, installing the light fixture was a breeze. This was accomplished by purchasing a standard lamp kit at the hardware store. Crude, but effective, we made some really cool bottle lamps at home, and even created a few keepsakes along the way.

Fast forward to today’s Bottle Lamp Making.

The bottle lamp crafters have been recognized and the market answered. From lamp kits that offer the option to not drill, to USB chargeable light strings that illuminate glass colored bottles as well. Every angle has been covered and simplified in a way that can be viewed as both good and bad. Learning the technique to drilling was rewarded with a finished art piece.

Today’s lamp kits for bottle lamps have made this whole process less of a hassle (good) and degraded to experience as a whole (bad). Armed with a cordless drill and an arsenal of better equipment, today’s craft maker can emphasize less on the process and more on the overall appearance.

Here’s a list of supplies you will need to make a bottle lamp at home:

  • Lamp Shade
  • LED Light Bulb
  • Bottle Lamp Kit
  • Glass Drilling Drill Bits
  • Rubber Grommet

You can find most of these items at your local hardware store or check out our resources page for more information.

The Lamp Shade listed above is referenced as a ‘chandelier’ lamp shade. The hoops shown in the picture will allow for you to place this particular lamp shade directly on the light bulb for easy assembly. You might be able to find inexpensive lamp shades at your local thrift store as well. It’s fun to add personal touches or funky decorations to a lamp shade as well.

In this article you can learn how to choose the correct lamp shade for making a bottle lamp at home.

All of the bottle lamp making materials listed below may be sold in bulk.

If it is your intent to only create one bottle lamp at home then you will want to make sure the quantities are in line with what you need. There is no need to purchase a pack of ten of anything just to save a few pennies. Making a bottle lamp at home doesn’t have to break your bank account or your piggy bank for that matter.

LED light bulb for bottle lamp making

An LED Light Bulb offers energy efficiency and is a safe way to light any home made bottle lamp. This light bulb will never be warm to the touch so you can add all sorts of decorations to your lamp shade.

A complete Bottle Lamp Kit for making a bottle lamp at home should include the electrical cord, the light bulb socket, a threaded rod and several tighteners to secure the light to the glass bottle. Learn more about bottle lamp kits in this helpful article.

Glass drilling drill bits in four different sizes .

Glass Drilling Drill Bits like the ones pictured here from Bosch are available as a set on Amazon for around $10. Drill bits come in many different sizes, but you really only need the four pictured above.

Rubber grommet for making a bottle lamp at home

The small Rubber Grommet will protect the electrical cord from the sharp edges of the hole you drilled in the glass bottle. The grommet will also give your homemade bottle lamp a nice finished look and will help to keep any bottle filler from spilling out.

The Tools you will need to make a bottle lamp at home:

  • A screw driver
  • A corded or cordless drill
  • A pair of heavy duty gloves and
  • A pair of safety glasses.

In this easy to follow YouTube video we will show you the bottle lamp making process in detail.

Collecting the necessary parts and having these household tools within reach will open new doors of opportunity to explore your inner creative side. Go forth and create, have fun, and be safe.

Bottle Drilling Question

We have used an 8ml glass drill bit (Tungsten carbide) but after drilling 5 bottles it has appeared to be blunt and broke the rest of the bottles Can you advise how to get around this, understand that cooling the drill bit can help?

Cooling the drill bit with a lubricating oil and even cool water will help. Start out slow and be sure to hold the drill bit firmly, don’t let the drill bit wobble too much. Once you have a starter hole for the drill bit to sit in you can speed up the drill and continue drilling. If you make larger holes, it helps to switch out drill bits, going from small to large. This way there is less wear and tear on just one bit, and they will last longer.

Lamp Shade Question

Best place to buy bulk white lampshades for painting on? Also looking for best chrome or metal fixtures on neck of bottles?

The best place we found to buy white lampshades locally is at Walmart. They have a few inexpensive shades in different styles. There are a few wholesale websites that sell lampshades at somewhat reasonable prices. You could also make your own lampshades. This article on Cleanidepia.com explains how to make a lampshade from scratch really well. Did you know? All you need to make lampshade frame is a few wire coat hangers. Cool, huh?

When it comes to the chrome and metal fixtures, check out our supplies page or visit your local hardware store.

Thank you to Ruth, the mom, for reaching out to us. I hope we were helpful in answering your questions. You can see more of her daughter Rebekah’s beautiful, one of a kind, artwork on her Art an Doodles portfolio blog.

The Perfect Handcrafted Gift For Fathers Is A Bottle Lamp

Handcrafted bottle lamp

Are you ready to make a custom bottle lamp?

If you have an amazing dad like I do, then Father’s Day should be every day. To me, nothing says “You’re The Best” like a handcrafted gift from the heart. You can make a commemorative gift that comes from the heart and will bring joy for years to come.

Do you have a dad, grandfather, brother, husband or male friend who have all the latest gadget, tools and toys? I bet he doesn’t have a hand crafted Bottle Lamp made from his favorite liquor or non-alcoholic glass bottle. This year, surprise your Dad, or your favorite male relative, with his favorite bottle of wine or liquor minus the unhealthy contents. You can find all the supplies you will need right here.

Learn how to create a one of a kind bottle lamp that is

masculine, functional and a conversation starter.

A Bottle Lamp is the perfect Handcrafted Gift For Fathers

Impress your Dad with an awesome bottle lamp gift!

Create a bottle lamp in 5 simple steps:

  • Buy a bottle of your Dad’s favorite wine , liquor or non-alcoholic beverage, it must be in a glass bottle.
  • Empty the contents by having a drink fest or just pour it into a separate container.
  • Drill a hole in the back of the bottle, see instructional video.
  • Clean the bottle carefully, be sure to remove all glass residue and to to keep the label intact, if applicable.
  • Attach the lamp kit and find a matching lamp shade.

The many ways to turn your perfect handcrafted gift into a unique bottle lamp.

Fill The Bottle

Start by picking a glass bottle that looks masculine or has some kind of meaning for the person you gift it to! It could be a wine bottle with a unique label or a funky shaped liquor bottle.  After you drill the hole in the bottle and insert the lamp kit, you can add your own touches by filling the bottle with your favorite filler

A bottle lamp filler could be anything that isn’t flammable. For instance, glass rocks or beads make great fillers and add stability to the bottle. We have also used lava rocks, used bullet shells and numerous other fillers. Let your imagination guide you!

You don’t have to add a heavy filler to your Perfect Handcrafted Gift unless you want to.

Decorative Lamp Shade

Another way to make your perfect handcrafted gift for fathers a one of kind, is to decorate the lamp shape. You can buy a lamp shade online that is already the perfect shape, size and color for your bottle lamp. We offer some good lamp shade ideas and tips in this article.

You can also make your own lamp shade from scratch. It’s a little bit harder and a lot more time consuming, but the end result will be a bottle lamp that truly can never be replaced. Check out this step by step guide on how to make a lamp shade.

Decorate the Bottle

The third and final way to make your handgrafted gift unique is by decorating the bottle itself. You can attach decorations to the neck of the bottle like nuts and bolts or find a cool bottle stopper.

Of course you could also decorate the glass bottle by spray painting it with chalk paint or frosted paint. You will then be able to create a custom personalized message for a dad that wants nothing from his loved ones.

Bottle Lamp Crafting For Everyone

With the Holidays quickly approaching and the quarantine no where in sight, maybe some consideration should be given to some new hobbies. Up-cycling glass bottles may seem rather passive, but if you think about the upside to not throwing empty glass bottles away then you might be doing more for the environment then just yourself. If you are fortunate enough to live near a glass recycling plant then you can skip the rest of this paragraph. Keeping the landfills a little less cluttered and finding a new hobby might just be what you need to feel good about everything once again.

Frosted bottles with lights on Etsy

There are a lot of things that you can do with a glass bottle. Lets start out simple with just a string of lights. With a spray can of ‘Sea Glass Spray Paint‘, you can give those old empties a new look. Top them off with a simple string of lights and you’ve just given your first glass bottle an up-cycle makeover!

Are you thirsty for more? Ready to tackle something a little more advanced? Let’s try glass cutting. It was a few years ago that we found ourselves in Belize attempting to score and separate glass bottles. The only reason why I mention our location is because we really didn’t need anything too fancy to make this happen. I brought our glass bottle cutter with us in my back-pack! After scoring your glass bottle, all you need is a little hot / cold water to complete the separation process.

Hey, you’ve made it this far, let’s try something really cool. A bottle lamp. We can all admit it at this point. There are bottles out there that for whatever reason, shape, cool label, or favorite beverage, we just can’t seem to throw the bottle away. This is where simplicity meets justification. You can recycle your empty bottle there by giving purpose to something that you would have previously discarded. The simplicity lies in the fact that you can pick up a bottle lamp kit on-line or at any box store with a hardware section.

DIY Bottle Lamp Ideas, Tips & Inspirations

Don’t forget why you ventured out on this little journey. You wanted to have fun. So there it is, have fun. Some projects work out and some don’t. We only really learn something after we’ve gotten it wrong a few times and then the process that works will always stick with you. So go have some fun, enjoy the journey, and making something cool in the process.
