Wine Bottle Lamp Sockets

Wine Bottle Lamp Kit

In order to turn your favorite wine bottle into a functioning lamp you need to purchase a lamp socket.

The lamp socket is part of a kit that you install on the top of your bottle, you can then run the cord through the bottle and install a light string with it or let the cord run outside of the bottle (if you don’t want to drill a hole). There are several different Wine Bottle Lamp Kits to choose from.

The one that is right for you depends on which lamp shade you’re planning on using, the size of your bottle, and if you are comfortable drilling a hole in the glass.

The Candlestick Bottle Adapter – This is the lamp kit that we use most of the time for our Bottle Lamps. The Candlestick Adapter comes with bottle adapters in three different sizes. This kit is very easy to install, comes with an eight foot white cord and has a push through on and off switch on the socket.  For this particular bottle lamp kit you will need a lamp shade that sits on top of the light bulb socket. Most department stores carry inexpensive lamp shades for this kit.

Make A Lamp Harp Kit – The Make A Lamp Kit has a brass plated 10″ detachable harp and push through on and off switch. Like I mentioned above, the harp lamp kit is used for lamp shades that have a small hole in the frame. The lamp shade sits on top of the harp and is secured with a decorated screw on top. This kit is very easy to install and has an eight foot brown cord. Keep in mind that some harps can be a bit wobbly. You might want to re-enforce the harp, especially if the lamp shade is heavy. Lamp kits with harps are available with 7, 8, 9, and 10 inch harps.

Cork Stopper Lamp Kit – This lamp kit (set of two) is perfect for turning vintage wine bottles into lamps if you’re apprehensive about drilling a hole and running the risk of breaking the bottle. The cork stopper lamp conversion kit has the 6 foot cord attached to the light socket and sits outside of the bottle. It has a one inch cork that will fit most wine bottle openings.

Wine Bottle Lamp Kit

Fellow bottle crafters send us lamp kit questions all the time:

“The adapter doesn’t fit the neck of the bottle. Any thoughts of how to get it to fit?”

We used a few layers of duct tape to add a little bit of width to the adapter or rubber stopper to make it fit.

Of course once you installed your bottle lamp light socket you need to add a lamp shade.

I’m making a lamp using a large 1.75L bourbon bottle. The candlestick kit doesn’t have an adapter that fits. Can you tell me which kit was used to make the Growler Bottle Lamp that is pictured on your “Bottle Lamp Kits Explained” page?

I used the rubber ring that fit the closest to it and then added a little ‘padding’ to it to make it work. This is something that always needs to be addressed when using these kits as nothing ever seems to fit exactly. The growler was a little bit bigger challenge. For the growler I cut out a cardboard width that matched the height of the rubber stopper and then the length to match the circumference as well. By adding this padding you will make your light post fit more snugly inside the neck.

One more thing that I did to ensure that this would stay stable was to incorporate the lid that screwed onto the growler. By drilling a hole in the center that will be just big enough to let the lamp post pass through you can screw the lid back on and give it even more stability.

You mentioned on your bottle lamp kit site that you can get lampshades that just fit on the bulb. Are you talking about shades with bulb clips? And where do you find larger shades with clips? I see plenty of them with a ring that screws onto a lamp harp but the only ones with clips seem to be small candelabra shades.

I have the bottle lamp kit that has the cork on the bottom and am having trouble finding shades for it.

The illustration below will give you a better idea of the different types of lamp shades available. Believe it or not we’ve purchased quite a few from Wal-Mart. We just added a personal touch to make them less bland (trim or decorations).

Peruvian Evil Spirits Bottle

Here is a picture of an evil spirits bottle from Peru sent to us by Steve.

Pictures of an evil spirits bottle statue that I picked up during my travel to Machu Picchu Peru some years back, it shows fine craftsmanship in detail, and contains teeth and hair and real horns from both goats and llamas, local animals from the area. And it is all sculptured in clay and contains some very artistic pieces intertwined around the bottle which I understand is a Budweiser hidden underneath. The Halloween season seems to be a good time to display it, don’t you think? Steve

Evil Spirit Bottle from Peru
Evil Spirit Bottle

Yup! We agree, it’s creepy and perfect for Halloween!

Thank you for sending us the pictures, you can see more evil spirit bottle pictures on our Bottle Crafts DIY Facebook page.

Here is a little more information on Halloween: “Evolving from the ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain, modern Halloween has become less about literal ghosts and ghouls and more about costumes and candy. The Celts used the day to mark the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, and also believed that this transition between the seasons was a bridge to the world of the dead. Over the millennia the holiday transitioned from a somber pagan ritual to a day of merriment, costumes, parades and sweet treats for children and adults.”

Recycled Bottle Neck Shot Glass

recycled bottle shot glass

Ray, from Creator’s Stained Glass Inc., has sent us his latest creation ‘The GlasTopper’.

I’ve been cutting different types of glass bottles for awhile now and it always felt a bit off to throw away any of it. Besides making wind chimes I never knew what to do with the cut off bottle necks.

Now you and I can use our beer bottle necks and turn them into the perfect little shot glasses. Or use a larger bottle and turn the neck into a unique drinking glass.

The GlasTopper is dish washer safe and comes in clear and black. Up-cycle your Bottle Necks into Glasses!

Glastopper Instructions:

Wine bottle and beer bottle openings vary. Wine bottle’s usually have a smaller opening than a beer bottle. To insert the Glastopper into a small opening, you should first get it wet with some water and then twist it into the opening.

On a larger opening, you may push in the GlasTopper dry. However, you may still get it wet to push it in. Allow 10 minutes for the rubber to re-expand and that will keep the GlasTopper in place.

The Glastopper

With one empty bottle you can make; a drinking glass and this neat little shot glass with the remaining neck of the bottle. Nothing goes to waste and the whole bottle gets up-cycled!

This is a great gift idea for anyone on your gift list, not just the person who is into bottle cutting or who wants to do craft work as a hobby.

Product review – The little stoppers are easy to use and once they are in place they fit nice and snug so you won’t have to worry about them coming apart while your using them.

Easy to clean and stylishly designed they can be the perfect addition to your next party or get together. The rubber stoppers keep any liquid from leaking and with the sturdy base you don’t have to worry about spilling any of your favorite liquor.

If you are interested in purchasing The GlasTopper, you can find them on Amazon. (Available in clear and black.)

These unique and fun bottle neck stems are selling for only $17.99. You get four bottle stoppers in each box.

Creator’s Bottle Neck Cutter Review

Bottle Neck Cutter Review

Having the right tool for the job is essential to whatever task you have at hand. Imagine having the right tool show up in your mail box!

When the Creator’s Bottle Neck Cutter (CBNC) arrived I was more than excited to test it right away. I’ve seen the ‘Hurricane Lamps’ on the Pinterest boards for awhile now and it always came down to asking ‘How did they do that?’

Finding the right device to take the neck off of glass bottles was what Ray from Creator’s Stained Glass Inc. pondered before creating this new device.

Creator's Bottle Neck Cutter

Straightforward, easy to use, you’ll be cutting off bottle necks in no time. A tightening screw set on the side allows you to adjust the height that you want and then lock that position in. This bottle cutter will come in handy if you are doing a continuous succession of similar bottles.

Holding the CBNC with one hand allows you to rotate the bottle around with your other hand. Keeping a constant downward pressure while slowly rotating the bottle. I could visually see my score line while cutting. Note: Being able to see how far along you have made your score prevents you from over scoring.

Finishing – Taking a light wet sand paper to the edges is highly recommended. Little shards are usually left behind and you want your edges to be smooth, not only for the end user, but for the look of your project as well. The separation on these score lines was so precise that you really don’t need to spend a lot of time sanding your edges.

Creator’s Bottle Neck Cutter Review Summary

I literally took this tool out of the box and shot the complimentary video that coincides with this post. It was that easy!  By using the hot/cold method to separate my score line the whole process took less than five minutes. This time included heating the water, and the sanding as well.

This Bottle Neck Cutter is made of thick, impact resistant Lexan plastic and a high quality carbide cutting head. It is a must-have for anyone who does craft work that involves glass cutting. You will be pleasantly surprised to find a clean and consistent separation for all your glass scoring and separating, even when working with tapered bottles.

Bottle Lamp Creations By Gypsy Bottle Boutique

Bottle Decor

BL – How long have you been creating your bottle lights?

GBB I have been using bottles for my artistic genre for about 3 years. I started out by melting bottles down in my kiln for trays, spoon rests, candy dishes, etc. After doing this for about a year I decided to look for another way to display the beauty of a glass bottle. There are so many bottles with beautiful labels and designs, these details cannot highlighted when I was melting everything down. Labels have to be scraped off and most times intricate detail of a glass bottle will be lost when heated. This gave me the perfect gateway to bottle lights, I decided to buy a drill and try a new venture, bottle lights.

Frozen Bottle Light

BL – Do you have fun tidbits about yourself or your business you would like to share with our readers?

GBBThe name of my company is The Gypsies in a Bottle Boutique…. I have been mesmerized my whole life with gypsies. The culture and history has always intrigued me with such a strong allure. My favorite book of all time is Wuthering Heights which I read early in life, I think this is where I contracted the “Gypsy Fever!” The book is about a forbidden love between a lady and a gypsy that surpasses the grave! Such an awesome book! Anyway, I am now married and have settled down and I am not much of a nomad anymore. However, I will always be a gypsy at heart and it’s the perfect name for my business.

Bottle platter

My husband and I own a few restaurants so I have a perfect source for my bottle inventory. I have over 5000 bottles in my storage, no joke. I also did this all on my own. I have drilled every single bottle I have ever sold. This is funny to me because I have been asked more than a handful of times, “Does your husband drill them out for you?” I am the bottle maker from start to finish, except the liquor I don’t drink liquor, so I do get assistance there..

Bottle and Quotes

I love learning about glass by working with the bottles and getting my own techniques etc. I love making beautiful pieces out of ordinary things. I like how personal a bottle craft can be as a gift. Something so common as a bottle turned into a memory or treasure. I make a lot of wedding invitation bottles, they make a great wedding gift. I take the wedding invite and size it accordingly to the melted bottle and then decorate the neck with the theme or colors of the wedding. I have made bunches of the “bottle trays” like this but I am excited to make a lamp using a wedding invite!

Lighting The Way With Bottles Be Glowing

Working up new ideas and innovative ways to put her bottles with lights together, Jessie from Bottles Be Glowing is always on the go!

It’s nice to find a window of opportunity to catch up with our fellow bottle crafters. We don’t want to take them away from what they love to do, but at the same time it’s nice to sit down and find out what their up to.

Botttle-Lamp (BL) – How as Bottles Be Glowing changed since we last spoke?

Jessie“I don’t know if “BottlesBeGlowing” has changed as much as I have changed. I was always unsure if I was doing the bottle the “correct” way, then I realized the correct way is the way I want it and if I loved the finished look. I started trying different things and not worrying if they didn’t work out, I learned from the mistakes and was able to achieve different looks for the bottles. When you start looking , just about anything can go on a bottle. That has opened up a whole new area for me. I can spend hours going through craft stores, garage sales etc. It’s become a passion that’s fun and relaxing.  When you see that you have brought happiness to another because of something you made? That’s pretty awesome.”

Cross n Butterfly
BL – Would you say that you are busier than you were this time last year?

Jessie“Yes I am busier, it comes in waves it seems. Using Pinterest, Twitter and Facebook really helps to get the store out there. Right now it’s quiet, so that gives me time to work on bottles and try some new things. I’ll get to take a couple weeks vacation too!

Cafe Boheme
BL – What has your experience been like selling your crafts on Etsy?

Jessie – “I  enjoy selling on Etsy. It’s nice to be on a site with other crafters and the store was easy to set up. I have quite a few bottles listed and I love to go and check how many visits you have to your store and if people are liking your items etc.”

Bottles Be Glowing on Etsy
BL – What are you working on right now?

Jessie“I just finished a “Dreams” bottle that has Dreams in gold letters on a green bottle. It has a couple of other words, Laugh, Hope and Wonder in pink and blue. I’ve created a flower piece at the top in pink that is really unique and a white butterfly sits on the flower. I used a pink paint and sponged over it with a gold sparkle paint. It literally glows :)
I have about 3 or 4 ideas in my head for the next bottle, I think they will be focused on a fall theme.
My husband taught me how to drill the bottles, so I have been doing that also when I need one that’s not been drilled yet and he is not available.”

Fall Wooden Pendant
BL – Are you getting ready for the Fall/Christmas season?

Jessie“I have started some fall bottles, which I absolutely love doing. There are always some new fall foliage available that catches my eye. I can’t wait to start the Christmas bottles, I have a few made and once I get back from vacation I will get in full Christmas mode :)”

Double Bottle

This clever double bottle with lights was taken before it even could make it over to the Etsy store! Personally I’m really not that surprised since I’m guilty myself of grabbing one before someone else even had a chance.

Intro to the Bottle Neck Cutter

We are excited to share a little heads up with you about our upcoming recycled bottle projects.

Ray from Creator’s Stained Glass, Inc. has been sending us emails and pictures about his latest glass cutter. A highly effective Bottle Neck Cutter!

Why would you need another bottle cutter, you ask? Because it cuts the neck of any glass bottle like no other. That’s why! ;)

Take a look at this picture of various bottle necks, not a single one was filed, stoned or clipped in any way. How cool is that?
