Hobby Lobby Crafts Store

We’ve been seeing the Hobby Lobby Facebook ads for a while now and couldn’t wait to finally go to one.

Since the closest Hobby Lobby is over 100 miles away we had to bide our time until we could make this road trip. Finally the day arrived and we set out with high hopes to the mecca of crafters!

The Hobby Lobby in Fargo North Dakota

On a Saturday afternoon, Silke and I ventured off to the Hobby Lobby in Fargo, North Dakota. We have seen the crafting supplies they have online, but we had never been in an actual Hobby Lobby store before. With so many items on our list we may have unfortunately built our expectations a little too high.

Upon arriving we saw it was your typical big box store. The front doors greeted customers with sale items and the closing seasons items. With so many isles to choose from we quickly felt overwhelmed by the huge selection they offered. Our agenda was to find Styrene and/or flame retardant spray in an attempt to make our own lamp shades. It seemed like an easy request, but the items and the task soon proved to be elusive.

An isle of already assembled lamps was followed by a complete section of lamp shades. This seemed strange given that it was a craft store. These same items were sold in Wal-Mart and Target and it defeated the purpose of finding the supplies someone needed to actually hand make these items.

Frustrated, we finally broke down and started asking store employees. The ‘deer in the head lights’ look was all we could get out of three different people that we asked. Each one directed us to Home Depot. Sending us to a different store may have been well intended, but we had already been there and knew they didn’t have what we were looking for either. Dismayed but not so easily dismissed we tried to find other items that we may or may not have needed for some of our other projects.

After wandering around the store for a good hour, we ended up checking out with a small bag of items (2 yards of fabric and a roll of trim). We made our way back to the car and could only wonder how a retail outlet such as this could have so little of what we actually came for.

Shelves as far as one could see and Christmas decorations galore, yet nothing enticed us to actually purchase anything. Driving out of the parking lot, it somehow felt as though we had built up our expectations towards something that never really existed. The mecca of crafters was just an illusion.

Bottom line:

Our trip to the Hobby Lobby was a complete waste of time.

Do you have a favorite craft supplies store? Any idea where to find Styrene (the liner inside lamp shades)?

  1. HOBBY LOBBY IS MY FAVORITE STORE EVER!!!! I am surprised you didn’t find more of what you went shopping for. They always have what I need and more. The store in Ocala and the one in St. Augustine, Florida are amazing! We have to drive 50 minutes to get to one and we end up spending no less than $300 a visit. From the rows and rows of beads and findings to scrapbooking to clever items for the home (I know, I sound like a commercial), but really, I start at one end and go down every isle whenever I am there and I feel like a kid in a candy store! We have begged them to open a Hobby Lobby in our town of Gainesville. I hope they do one day!

    1. Sharon,

Thanks for stopping by. Our experience at this particular store did not in any way deter us from continuing to shop at Hobby Lobby. We have a smaller one in Alexandria, Minnesota and I’m hoping there will be one in Charleston once we get to Summerville. The online selection is large but it’s nice to be able to actually look at the selection.

  2. This design is spectacular! You certainly know how to keep a reader entertained.
Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog
(well, almost…HaHa!) Great job. I really loved what you had to say, and more than that,
how you presented it. Too cool!
