These ‘bottle lamps’ are designed and painted by my daughter Rebekah who has autism, we have already had several commissions and working on perfecting the final product, drilling, grommets, collared wiring, etc. Thank you for your advice on your blogs.

Bottle Drilling Question

We have used an 8ml glass drill bit (Tungsten carbide) but after drilling 5 bottles it has appeared to be blunt and broke the rest of the bottles Can you advise how to get around this, understand that cooling the drill bit can help?

Cooling the drill bit with a lubricating oil and even cool water will help. Start out slow and be sure to hold the drill bit firmly, don’t let the drill bit wobble too much. Once you have a starter hole for the drill bit to sit in you can speed up the drill and continue drilling. If you make larger holes, it helps to switch out drill bits, going from small to large. This way there is less wear and tear on just one bit, and they will last longer.

Lamp Shade Question

Best place to buy bulk white lampshades for painting on? Also looking for best chrome or metal fixtures on neck of bottles?

The best place we found to buy white lampshades locally is at Walmart. They have a few inexpensive shades in different styles. There are a few wholesale websites that sell lampshades at somewhat reasonable prices. You could also make your own lampshades. This article on Cleanidepia.com explains how to make a lampshade from scratch really well. Did you know? All you need to make lampshade frame is a few wire coat hangers. Cool, huh?

When it comes to the chrome and metal fixtures, check out our supplies page or visit your local hardware store.

Thank you to Ruth, the mom, for reaching out to us. I hope we were helpful in answering your questions. You can see more of her daughter Rebekah’s beautiful, one of a kind, artwork on her Art an Doodles portfolio blog.

Bottle Lamp Crafting For Everyone

With the Holidays quickly approaching and the quarantine no where in sight, maybe some consideration should be given to some new hobbies. Up-cycling glass bottles may seem rather passive, but if you think about the upside to not throwing empty glass bottles away then you might be doing more for the environment then just yourself. If you are fortunate enough to live near a glass recycling plant then you can skip the rest of this paragraph. Keeping the landfills a little less cluttered and finding a new hobby might just be what you need to feel good about everything once again.

Frosted bottles with lights on Etsy

There are a lot of things that you can do with a glass bottle. Lets start out simple with just a string of lights. With a spray can of ‘Sea Glass Spray Paint‘, you can give those old empties a new look. Top them off with a simple string of lights and you’ve just given your first glass bottle an up-cycle makeover!

Are you thirsty for more? Ready to tackle something a little more advanced? Let’s try glass cutting. It was a few years ago that we found ourselves in Belize attempting to score and separate glass bottles. The only reason why I mention our location is because we really didn’t need anything too fancy to make this happen. I brought our glass bottle cutter with us in my back-pack! After scoring your glass bottle, all you need is a little hot / cold water to complete the separation process.

Hey, you’ve made it this far, let’s try something really cool. A bottle lamp. We can all admit it at this point. There are bottles out there that for whatever reason, shape, cool label, or favorite beverage, we just can’t seem to throw the bottle away. This is where simplicity meets justification. You can recycle your empty bottle there by giving purpose to something that you would have previously discarded. The simplicity lies in the fact that you can pick up a bottle lamp kit on-line or at any box store with a hardware section.

We only really learn something after we’ve gotten it wrong a few times and then the process that works will always stick with you. So go have some fun, enjoy the journey, and making something cool in the process.

Up-cycling Glass Bottles Into Egg Holders

Egg Holders from Bottles

With so many glass bottle projects to do it’s often easy to overlook some of the most obvious ones. In fact, this latest endeavor has been staring me in the face every morning for the past several years. The inconspicuous egg holder that gets used on a regular basis was something that could also be incorporated into our bottle crafts projects.

The aspiration – If you have ever really taken the time to look at different wine bottles, then you will have noticed that each one as a varying different sized dimple in the base of the bottle. This dimple, often referred to as a punt, gives the bottle extra structural strength and stability. If you were to score the bottle just above the dimple and then separate it, turned right side up, you would then have a perfect egg holder!

The plan – Find a wine bottles that offered the right size dimple. Too shallow and it wouldn’t stand upright. Not big enough and the egg wouldn’t fit. The right size will keep your egg in the upright position allowing you access to it’s top so that you can enjoy your soft boiled egg properly.

The execution – Once I had the bottles collected it was time to go to work. For this project I went with my Creator’s Bottle Cutter. Setting the height and locking it in gave me the assurance that both bottles, once scored and separated, would both be the same height.

Saber Tooth sanding pads by Bottle Cutting Inc.

The final product – These particular bottles both scored and separated nicely. A little light sanding with my Saber Tooth Diamond Sanding Pads gave the edges a nice smooth finish that will make it safe to wash and won’t scratch any table surfaces.
