Instructions for a hand made Mason Jar Potpourri Warmer

Instructions for making a Mason Jar Potpourri Warmer:

  • Use the diamond tipped drill bit to make a hole in the back of the Mason Jar. Take a look at our instructional videos if you need help drilling into glass.
  • Insert the light string through the back of the Mason Jar. (If you’re not comfortable drilling glass, you can also run the light string out of the top of the jar. The light string will be secured by the rubber band.)
  • Add potpourri from the top of the jar. It’s best to do this in succession, add a few lights then add some potpourri, more lights, more potpourri until the jar is filled.
  • Cut a piece of cloth to cover the mouth of the jar, approx. 5 inches in diameter. Any cotton fabric will do just fine. Make sure to cut it large enough so the cloth can hang over the sides.
  • Secure the cloth with a rubber band.
  • Cover the rubber band with a piece of rope, colorful raffia or a decorative ribbon.

Plug in your Mason Jar Potpourri Warmer and enjoy as the scent of warming potpourri fills your home.

As the scent fades over time, simply remove the cloth and add  fresh potpourri or dribble a few drops of fragrance oil or essential oils on the cloth.

Lighted potpourri jars are such an easy craft that they make ideal hostess gifts for impromptu holiday gatherings.

Giving a Holiday Potpourri Mason Jar as a gift? Add a few festive ornaments or other seasonal decorations, wrap in cellophane and tie with curly ribbons.

Add your unique touch to make illuminated potpourri holiday jars for gift giving or holiday decorating.

Mason Jar Potpourri Warmers make it easy to infuse a room with holiday ambiance!

A letter to Santa from a bottle lamp maker

Dear Santa,

I know your busy, but I was wondering if you could help out a fellow crafter like yourself. As you may well know, it always helps to have the right tools for the project your working on. Bottle lamp making is no exception. I’ve put together a wish list for you and I would appreciate any help you can give.

The first thing I would like is to get through the glass. With this Drill Master 6 piece carbide tip drill bit set, I’ll be there in no time at all. These drill bits are good for drilling both glass and tile. This set of carbide tip glass and tile cutting drill bits come in three of the most popular drill bit sizes: 1/8″, 3/16″, 1/4″, 5/16″, 3/8″ and 1/2″. Each drill bit features a wider blade angle for more precise and stable drilling. These drill bits feature C-3 tungsten carbide for drilling glass, plastics, Formica tiles and ceramics. It does help to have different sizes available!

The drill bits won’t be of much use if I don’t have a really swell 18-volt 1/2 inch cordless compact drill. This cordless drill offers:

  • Offers dual speed range (0-500/0-1,700 rpm)
  • 1/2-inch chuck; 17 clutch settings
  • Powered by rechargeable, long-lasting compact Lithium-Ion batteries
  • Measures 8.2 inches and weighs 4 pounds
  • Backed by a limited three-year warranty; 90-day money-back guarantee

I’m only mentioning all this to let you know I did my homework and I’m not just grabbing a bunch of random items off the shelf. ; )

All lamps are only as good as the components that are put into them. Having a few extra bottle lamp conversion kits around would really be awesome.

The kit comes with 3 different size rubber adapters ( 1/2″, 3/4″ and 15/16″ size), to fit different size wine bottle necks. All necessary hardware parts and instructions are also included. With this kit you can create a clever lamp in minutes.

A nice string of 35 clear mini lights are always a must to truly bring out the best of the wine bottles with lights. Super Bright 3.5 volt bulbs are perfect for the job at hand. The LED light strings might be a little more spendy, but they don’t give off heat and are more energy efficient.

As a bonus if one bulb burns out, the rest will stay lit! These same bulbs come in different colors and multi colored sets.

To really take my bottle lamp making to a whole new level, a 5 speed drill press would make my work a whole lot easier. It’s hard to imagine just how many lamps and lighted bottles I could make! With an Induction motor 2/5HP 1725RPM, drill press swing: 8-Inch, Column diameter 1-13/16-Inch, Quill diameter 1-9/16-Inch, Spindle travel 2-Inch, Max. chuck capacity diameter 1/2-Inch, Cast iron table 6-1/4-Inch x 6-1/4-Inch, Table swivel 360 degrees.

Well, I tried to keep my wish list short. It’s no coincidence that I’m sending this to you the day before ‘Cyber Monday’. Maybe you and Mrs. Claus can take advantage of the specials that they have out there on the internet?

As far as whether I’ve been naughty or nice, I’ll leave that one up to you.

Yours truly,

Bottle-Lamp Maker

Old Crow Reserve Bottle Lamp

I have known one of my Dad’s favorite bourbons for quite awhile and it was only a matter of time before I got around to turning one of the empty bottles into a lamp. Beyond making something that was decorative, it was more important to make it functional. Something he would actually use. His birthday is still a month away but procrastination has never been something I’ve been to keen on.

Old Crow Reserve Bottle Lamp

People are always collecting bottles for me now. Not only did I get an Old Crow bottle but a ‘reserved’ one that made it even more unique. There are no lights within the bottle. Sticking with the functionality of the lamp over decoration there is only colored marble filler inside that will act as a weight for the lamp itself. This particular bottle still had the cap, so I was able to drill a hole through it and let it act as the stabilizer for the lamp mechanics. This always seems to give the bottle more of its original look and it also blends well with the lamp shade.

This was an easy project that didn’t take very long at all to put together. If you would like to make something similar be sure to check out our Do It Yourself videos. We also offer a free e-book that takes you through the step by step instructions.

It’s always challenging to find a balance between the bottle’s label and the actual lamp shade itself but every once in awhile things just seem to fall together.

Nick

P.S. Dad if you’re reading this, you know what you’re getting for your birthday.

P.P.S. Yes, you have to wait until your birthday before you get it.

Tips for Avoiding Bedbugs when Using Secondhand Items for Your Craft Projects

Most crafters know that some of the best bargains for materials to be used in their projects can be found at yard sales or thrift stores.

Some also take advantage of free materials offered by friends and neighbors or found on FreeCycle. It’s satisfying to recycle old things into something beautiful and these inexpensive items raise the profit margin for the end product; however, they also put the crafter’s home at risk for a bedbug invasion.

While pesticides once kept these pests, which live on dead skin cells, under control, they have recently made a great comeback in the most unexpected places.

The following tips will help crafters to avoid bringing bedbugs into their homes from secondhand items:

Bag Items Immediately

Avoiding bedbugs on second hand craft items
Bedbugs on Craft Items

It is a good practice to carry zippered plastic storage bags when shopping for used crafting items. Any purchased items made from fabric or fur should be zipped up before being placed into the vehicle for transport. Most crafters would also benefit from keeping a large plastic storage bin with a lid that snaps shut in their trunk. Larger items should go directly into the bin until they are ready to be processed for use.

Decontaminate Purchases Once Home

Several methods may be used to treat second-hand purchases as a precaution against bedbugs. High heat works great for most items. Anything that is washable should be washed in hot water if possible and placed in the dryer on high heat. Some crafting items cannot be washed, but they may be run through the dryer on high heat for thirty minutes. When using heat is not advisable, freezing the craft supplies in zippered bags will usually kill bedbugs and their eggs. Upholstered items that will not fit into the dryer may be treated either with a steam cleaner or a hair dryer. The heat should be applied slowly to every inch of the item being treated. If purchases have been brought into the home in reusable shopping bags, the bags should be washed and dried in high heat as well.

Quarantine When Time Allows

Craft items that are not going to be used for a while should be left outside of the home, in a garage or storage building for several weeks; then, they should be examined for the reddish-brown stains that bedbugs leave behind. If no evidence of bedbugs is apparent after a month, these articles can be considered safe.

Crafters should be just as cautious with any previously used supplies purchased from online sources. Boxes should always be opened in a tiled area or an area outside the residence. Boxes and materials should be carefully inspected and then processed in the same way as those bought at a thrift store. Bedbugs do not mind travelling through the postal service and are always excited about the food supply in a new home. When homeowners do not detect them quickly, they soon make their presence known in some unpleasant ways. Once they have found a way in, it may take expensive pest control treatments to get them to leave.

Karen Barnes writes for a site that has more tips on preventing bedbugs. You can learn more by following this link.

Four Little Penguin Lighted Bottles For A local Benefit

Bottle Craft Article About A Fundraiser

Gifting lighted wine bottles to a local benefit.

Nick’s sister Becky asked us to sell her one of our lighted bottles for an upcoming dinner and silent auction benefit. We decided we should do a little better than that and gave her four ‘The Little Penguin’ wine bottles with lights.

Each lighted wine bottle is decorated a little bit different. One bottle has a cluster of wine grapes, one has a big red heart with two white bows on either side, the blue labeled bottle has a string of white and blue beads and an orange ribbon, and the fourth bottle has a silver snowflake with silver ribbons around the neck.

Little Penguin Wine Bottles With Lights For A Local Benefit

The benefit is for a former classmate of Becky’s, Emilie Triebenbach Sonnenschein.

Emilie was seven months pregnant when she developed a case of preeclampsia, high blood pressure which is caused by pregnancy and affects major organs. On August 24, 2012 Doug and Emilie’s daughters Chalcedony (Kelly) Constance Sonnenschein was delivered by c-section eight weeks early. At first Emilie was stable, but shortly after birth she sustained a serious brain hemorrhage. On September 19, 2012 at the age of 29 years, Emilie passed away with Doug at her side.

Emilie was on a special assignment teaching as a licensed teacher at Abu Dhabi Education Council. Doug and Emilie were living in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates which is a long way from her family and friends. Baby Kelly is doing well despite all she has gone through. Funeral services are pending for Emilie in Nebraska. With the proceeds from this benefit, Doug and Kelly will hopefully be able to return to the States soon.

The dinner and silent auction will be held at the Thunder Lodge in Long Prairie, MN, on Saturday, November 17th from 1 – 8 pm.

If you would like to make a financial donation, please send it to:

A star bottle lamp is born

A unique warm blue bottle and an after Halloween discount isle lead to a brand new bottle that is truly illuminating.

I’ve had this blue bottle down stairs for awhile now, just holding out for inspiration to take hold and let me find something different to do with it. The first thing to go on this bottle were the labels. In the past the labels were usually left on and the lights that went inside were meant to accentuate the label itself. This bottle had more to offer.

Star bottle lamp

With the label removed the bottle suddenly took on a whole new feel. It was no longer constrained to it’s former use of transporting liquid, but a much more lofty purpose.

Keep it simple. That was my goal. With a string of 35 regular white lights inserted and running, the bottle’s blue outer coat seemed even more appealing. It was cool but it needed a wow that just seemed to elude me. Silke is more of the decorator and I felt out of my depth on this one.

So, ‘there I was‘, scouring the left over Halloween isles looking for bargains. O.k., I’ll be honest here. I’m the guy who goes in after the holiday to score on the now 75% price reduced candy so I can replenish my stash from the year before. The candy was soon an after thought when I spotted these really cool glow in the dark stickers. They were designed to be put on your kids shoes for while they went trick or treating. Images of little feet running up and down the side walk with these glowing stickers on somehow converted in my strange thought process to putting them on my bottle back at home.

Star bottle lamp aglow

It was brilliant! The yellowish stars affixed to the baby blue bottle that would resemble the night sky seemed too good to be true. After running the lights on inside for awhile I shut them off and voila! The stars would still be glowing afterward and slowly fade away. I showed Silke what I was attempting to do and she quickly corrected me on my improper placement of the stickers. I was too thrilled to see the end result to be insulted and readily handed the task over to her.

This bottle lamp turned out to be everything I imagined it to be and more. I guess even strange events can lead to inspirational ideas.
