Lighting An Upcycled Glass Vase

Glass Vase Lamp

Recycling and re-purposing glass bottles into lamps has always been the main theme with the bottle lamp site.

Our friend Murray opened the door to more glass possibilities when he re-purposed a glass vase with lights. Take a look at the email and pictures he sent us.

Hi Nick,
I hope all is well with you folks.
A few years ago we were at a wedding and as guests we were given a very tall, sleek, vase, the kind that are 2 to 3 ft tall.  We never had any thing to display in it and it was just gathering dust. Recently it was time to give it away or recycle it when I had a thought – why not upcycle it into a bottle lamp? Well, technically I guess I should call it a vase lamp.

Despite its huge height, double tapered shape, and its glass that is a robust 1/4 inch thick, it scored and cut perfectly. The tallest liquor bottles I have are Grey Goose so I put one beside the finished vase to show the contrast. The finished vase now sits in our living room where it has become a great conversation piece.

Cheers, Murray

What an impressive Glass Vase Lamp!

You have to give credit to someone who can look beyond an every day item and imagine something more. Even if you wanted to add some floral arrangement to this you would still benefit from having it light up an area in your room. We would like to thank Murray for sharing his glass project with us. It is also worth mentioning that he cuts all of his glass projects with the Creator’s Bottle Cutter.

Gran Gala Bottle Lamp

Lamp made from a Gran Gala Liquor bottle

As Barry shows us with his Gran Gala bottle lamp project, you can make an awesome lamp out of almost any liquor bottle.

You can even take your hand crafted lamp on the road with you. How awesome is that?

It’s been a while since we posted a DIY Show Off so I was very excited when we received the following email:

Hi Nick and Silke. I wanted to share one of the first bottle lamps that I made. I am fortunate to live very close to our local Mexican Cantina and have a good relationship with the owner who saves me all of their empty bottles from the bar. I used one of his provided Jack Daniels bottles and made him a nice lamp for his bar at home and he was very excited to have it.

The bottle I share with you today is one I made to use in our motor home when we are parked and touring the country. The steering wheel on our coach will re-position to provide a flat surface so I made a round table top to sit on top of the steering wheel, covered it with a nice table cloth and sit this attractive lamp right in the middle.

We have had many nice comments about this lamp so I suppose I need to make more and have to sell as we travel. Thank you for your guidance in bottle lamp making.

Best,
Barry M.

Lighting The Way With Bottles Be Glowing

Working up new ideas and innovative ways to put her bottles with lights together, Jessie from Bottles Be Glowing is always on the go!

It’s nice to find a window of opportunity to catch up with our fellow bottle crafters. We don’t want to take them away from what they love to do, but at the same time it’s nice to sit down and find out what their up to.

Botttle-Lamp (BL) – How as Bottles Be Glowing changed since we last spoke?

Jessie“I don’t know if “BottlesBeGlowing” has changed as much as I have changed. I was always unsure if I was doing the bottle the “correct” way, then I realized the correct way is the way I want it and if I loved the finished look. I started trying different things and not worrying if they didn’t work out, I learned from the mistakes and was able to achieve different looks for the bottles. When you start looking , just about anything can go on a bottle. That has opened up a whole new area for me. I can spend hours going through craft stores, garage sales etc. It’s become a passion that’s fun and relaxing.  When you see that you have brought happiness to another because of something you made? That’s pretty awesome.”

Cross n Butterfly
BL – Would you say that you are busier than you were this time last year?

Jessie“Yes I am busier, it comes in waves it seems. Using Pinterest, Twitter and Facebook really helps to get the store out there. Right now it’s quiet, so that gives me time to work on bottles and try some new things. I’ll get to take a couple weeks vacation too!

Cafe Boheme
BL – What has your experience been like selling your crafts on Etsy?

Jessie – “I  enjoy selling on Etsy. It’s nice to be on a site with other crafters and the store was easy to set up. I have quite a few bottles listed and I love to go and check how many visits you have to your store and if people are liking your items etc.”

Bottles Be Glowing on Etsy
BL – What are you working on right now?

Jessie“I just finished a “Dreams” bottle that has Dreams in gold letters on a green bottle. It has a couple of other words, Laugh, Hope and Wonder in pink and blue. I’ve created a flower piece at the top in pink that is really unique and a white butterfly sits on the flower. I used a pink paint and sponged over it with a gold sparkle paint. It literally glows :)
I have about 3 or 4 ideas in my head for the next bottle, I think they will be focused on a fall theme.
My husband taught me how to drill the bottles, so I have been doing that also when I need one that’s not been drilled yet and he is not available.”

Fall Wooden Pendant
BL – Are you getting ready for the Fall/Christmas season?

Jessie“I have started some fall bottles, which I absolutely love doing. There are always some new fall foliage available that catches my eye. I can’t wait to start the Christmas bottles, I have a few made and once I get back from vacation I will get in full Christmas mode :)”

Double Bottle

This clever double bottle with lights was taken before it even could make it over to the Etsy store! Personally I’m really not that surprised since I’m guilty myself of grabbing one before someone else even had a chance.

The Shellback Silver Rum Bottle Is Too Cool For School

I’ve been holding onto this particular bottle for quite awhile now. What to do with it was the biggest hurdle.

How could anyone want to throw something like this away? I mean even if you took off all the labels, the bottle itself is just too cool to simply be thrown in a dumpster much less a recycle bin. With it’s raised trident on the side and the bottom of the bottle showing a compass, the bottle itself is really a work of art.

If I’m starting to sound like a bit of a bottle connoisseur at this point then admission is the road to recovery. After making bottle lamps and different projects with bottles for as long as I have, every decanter that I see becomes fair came. It’s a gift, it’s a curse? Only time will tell.

Shellback Silver Rum Bottle

Inspiration finally happened – It was either that or; A) I was bored, B) It had been sitting in the cupboard too long and it was do or die or C) all of the above. If the bottle were cut in just the right place the top could be turned into a pendant light and the bottom could be a coin collector / ashtray of sorts. Either way it would be a win/win, nothing goes to waste with two products out of one!

Shellback Bottle Compass

The pressure to get it right! – I’ve cut quite a few bottles now and given what I have to work with this whole process should seem second nature. Cutting a beer bottle isn’t really too worrisome. I mean, if you screw it up, how hard will it be to get another one? Now a really unique bottle is a little bit different game. You mess this up and well you’ll only be left with broken pieces and thoughts of all that could have been.

Shellback Trident

Success! – It is such an awesome feeling when something like this or any project that you already have an idea of how it should look actually comes together. My first thought was letting someone use the bottom as an ash tray. After sanding it down there’s no way that’s going to happen. It will be a spare change collector or maybe a candle holder.

I will get back to report on how the pendant light turned out later on next month. Until then let me know what you think. We always enjoy the feedback on these projects!

From Bottles to Lamps

unique bottle chandelier

Are you looking for inspiration for your next bottle craft project? Pinterest is a great place to visit.

Pinterest is a visual discovery tool that you can use to find ideas for all your projects and interests. There are literally hundreds of different wine bottle lamps and recycled bottle creations.

In this article we are featuring a few of our favorite bottle lamp pins.

A favorite wine bottle lamp makes for ambient lighting. This is a bottle of wine you would pick up in the store just for the awesome looking label. You can get step by step instructions on how to make this lamp in our Recycled Bottle Lamps book.

Colorful bottles make this a one of a kind chandelier

This is a very clever idea for re-purposing an old chandelier. Collect several green and white wine bottles with twist off caps. Remove the labels and paint the clear ones in different colors. Drill a hole through the bottle cap and attach the bottles around the chandelier.

For this craft project you would have to straight cut the bottom of the bottle and make another diagonal cut at the top. This allow the heat of the candle to rise through the top, of course there is already a bottle opening, so the cut on top is for ascetic purposes only.

Here’s a project for the man cave! You can set this up through any combination of upcycled or new pipe fittings. Just be sure to allow enough room to feed your electrical wire through.

Who says a wine bottle lamp needs to stand upright? This is the perfect desk or coffee table accessory. You can recreate this awesome lamp by using an upcycled pendant light, a couple of clamps, an Edison light bulb and a home made stand.

There are many more recycled bottle project ideas to be found.

Up-Cycled Wine Bottles And Tree

After the holidays you may have driven through your neighborhood and noticed the discarded Christmas tree sitting next to the recycle container full of empty bottles of holiday cheer.

For Farmer Mike, this sight didn’t mark the end of a season but became one of new beginnings.

This is what Farmer Mike wrote:

“Great blog guys!

I like your idea for the bottle tree with the 4by4. I have an idea for the bottle tree that worked out great! Use a real tree. After Christmas I drive around and collect them. Once I get home with a load of them I cut the branches off approx. 18″ from the base of the tree then I cut the limbs so they are about 6-8 inches long. Then I dig a hole and tamp the remaining dirt around the base. I just finished a tree with 2 cases of bottles. Here’s the final result.

Have a great day…Farmer Mike”

Here is the end result!

What better way to recycle both of these things that would otherwise be added to the landfill? With a renewed purpose even the Rooster will have something to crow about.

We would like to thank Farmer Mike for sharing his project with us. Be sure to leave a comment below to let him know what you think. :)

“One of my coke creations that still has the real thing inside! Coke put out a limited number of these 4 packs a couple of years ago,  I thought it to be interesting and is a nice touch at Christmas!”

Corona Shine Lamp by Steve

We received this amazing looking photograph of a Corona Shine Lamp. Steve Collins from Collins Bar Lamps has created this unique Beer Bottle Lamp.

We are always thinking of our readers, so before posting the photo of his latest creation we asked Steve if he would be willing to give away some of his secrets???

Scroll down for his answers. :)

Corona Beer Bottle Lamp

Take a look at some of his other liquid filled bottles here.

Here is Steve’s answer:

“The creation of the lamp is centered around the base which is constructed from a piece of 2×6 cut out round then shaped, tapered and sanded down to somewhat resemble a sand mound. Then the bottom is cut out using what is known as a Forstner bit to house an under the counter halogen light.

The top hole is cut out using a smaller Forstner bit to match the diameter of the light shining up. These bits are very expensive, so purchasing one or two means you will have to make up the cost somewhere down the line when you sell a few of the lamps (hopefully).

Also the cutting procedure requires the utilization of a modified drill press and is pretty tricky as well as risky! So be cautious in trying this!

Covering the base with glue and sand then adding the beer bottle with epoxy plus the shells.

The bottle is sprayed with frost for the chill effect and crystals are added too.

The beer is colored water incidentally! I couldn’t waste a real beer on the lamp! I may be creative, but I’m not crazy, lol!

At the present I have no lime wedge on the lamp or other lights incorporated, but I’m open to suggestions all the time as these are a work in progress.

I make different types and brands of beer and liquor lamps depending what is ordered, and I sell them for about $60 plus shipping.”
