LED Starry String Lights

LED Starry String Lights by innotree

Highlighting areas around your home just got easier.

Warning: This is not your Dad and Mom’s Christmas light string. The fond memories of decorating for Christmas include going through strings of lights and determining which ones worked and which ones didn’t. Once you had them all sorted out you then began the lengthy process of trying to determine which bulb was the culprit to the broken lighting process. Ah the memories.

LED Starry Light String

Welcome to the new age of light strings. Today’s light strings are LED which makes them way more energy efficient then the big old electrical lines that hung around the mistletoe and they are so light weight that you can literally hang them on anything. When we got these I felt like a kid at Christmas all over again. Highlighting practically anything that you have in your home almost has a high school feel to a teenagers dream of decorating their room. Let me tell you that if this thing ran off of batteries I would have wrapped the dog in them.

Once you light string is set up, and they are illuminating your new focal point, than you get to experience the real joy of these little glowing gems.

LED Starry String Lights Headboard

The ultimate light show. Now grab the remote and start playing with all the different options. With over eight different settings to choose from you will be more than overwhelmed at the different possibilities that you can create. Some of the settings were very erratic and left me feeling like I was at a rave. Instead I settled for the more mellow feel of a slowly fading light that would rebound and come back again. It was like watching the stars at night that fade away into day over and over again. Throw on a little music and suddenly this boring little room in our home had taken on a life all it’s own.

LED Starry String Lights Mantel

Don’t stop now. I’m having way too much fun now and everything is fair game. For inspiration I headed over to Pinterest and those crazy kids had everything lit up. The book shelf was next followed by the mantel over the fire place.

LED Starry String Lights Bookshelf

After all of this and I hadn’t even gotten to the very thing that inspired this whole thing – the bottles with lights! Thinking about how I had drilled a hole into a glass bottle and threaded the huge light string through seems a like a distant memory already. The big and bulky lights have now been replaced with tiny little LED bulbs that could be fed through a hole much smaller than anything that I had needed to drill before. This particular light string was over 33 feet long! If I had managed to get them all inside the bottle it would have looked way too busy. One of the things that I had discovered while hanging light strings around the house was that they looked way better if they were hung loosely around things. It would allow the lights to look more natural rather than forced. In my opinion, the same rule should apply to DIY bottle lights as well.

LED Starry String bottle with lights

The LED Starry String Lights comes with a remote control and USB adapter. The length of the light string will allow you to cover some large areas around your home. The copper wiring is flexible enough to adhere to the shape of what you want to illuminate that it makes anything fair game. I was joking about the dog earlier. Please, leave Fido alone, but still have some fun.

Buy The LED Starry String Lights

The starry string lights, also called fairy lights, are available for only $12.99 on Amazon. Buy a couple of strings for your own home and be sure to get a couple to give away. Fairy lights will make great gifts for those hard to buy for family members and friends. You can give them away in the box they come in or incorporate them into a cool container/bottle like in the picture above.

How To Make A Jack Daniels Candle

jack daniels candle

Make a Jack Daniels bottle candle by following these easy steps.

The Pinterest pin for this DIY idea is one of our most popular ones, getting shared thousands of times. We decided to make this easy, illuminating craft project to share with you.

A couple of weeks ago we went to tour the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg, TN with our friend Mark. He bought a bottle of Jack Daniel’s Special Edition ‘The White Rabbit Saloon‘ Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey that is only sold at the facility in Lynchburg. We helped Mark drink the whiskey (which was very good by the way) while he was visiting us and decided to give him the empty bottle back in the form of a candle, as a keepsake. Scroll down to learn more about this one of a kind whiskey.

Candle made from Jack Daniel's bottle.

Tools used to make this DIY project:

The Creator’s Bottle Cutter

Saber Tooth Sanding Kit

The items used in this DIY project:

  • 1 lb.+ of premium wax
  • 1 – 8″ wick
  • 1 empty, cut bottle of Jack Daniel’s

supplies for making candles

I have used the Creator’s Bottle Cutter for quite awhile now. It is easy to operate and very reliable. With that said, this was actually the first time I scored a square bottle. Our friend Ray put together a really good video ‘Square Bottle Cutting 101‘ describing the process and I simply followed along.

Running the score line over the square bottle turned out to be rather easy. With the bottle cutter set in the up-right position, I simply moved it around on the base platform until I had come full circle.

Jack Daniels Bottle Cutting

With the bottle scored I went ahead with the separation process using the hot candle and cold water shock method.

Using this method rather then running hot water over the bottle was necessary to avoid getting the label wet. The label is what makes this bottle so unique and the fact that our friend Mark was with us made it even more of a keepsake.

The separation was nice and clean but I wanted to give it a nice finish. With the Saber Tooth sanding pads I was able to give it that nice polished look in no time at all.

Sanding Jack Daniels Bottle Lip

Once the lip of the Jack Daniels bottle is nice and smooth you can begin with the candle making part.

Use a double boiler to melt the wax. We found an old pot for $.50 at a second hand store and placed it inside a big frying pan filled with water to melt the wax. Use a thermometer to make sure the temperature of the wax doesn’t exceed 200 degree F. Once the wax is melted you can add candle fragrance if you want.

We didn’t have any on hand, so I thought we could add a little Bourbon Vanilla Extract. Well, it didn’t work, the vanilla just kind of beaded up in the wax, so be sure to use the proper stuff.

Melting wax to make a Jack Daniels candle

To hold the wick in place we used a small amount of super glue in the bottom of the bottle, that didn’t work either. Once we poured a small amount of hot wax into the bottle, the wick became loose again and we had to hold it in place while the wax was cooling.

Candle Wick in a Jack Daniels bottle

Making a Jack Daniels Candle

We slowly poured the rest of the wax into our Jack Daniel’s bottle. Again we had to hold the wick so it didn’t collapse into the hot wax. This part was a bit of a pain! Maybe attaching the wick to a stick or something, and letting it dangle into the bottle from the top would work better? We will try that the next time we make a candle.

Jack Daniels Bottle Candle

The end result turned out very nice!

One more tip… if you use a 750 ml bottle like you see in these pictures, be sure to have extra wax on hand. Once the wax cools and dries, the wax will shrink and you’ll end up with a concave on the top of your bottle candle. This can easily be filled in with a little more melted wax.

Jack Daniel’s The White Rabbit Saloon

Mr Jack Daniel was known to have a taste for a well-told tale and the company of good friends. They’re some of the reasons why he owned the White Rabbit Saloon on Lynchburg’s town square. The saloon was a favorite Lynchburg gathering place where he and his friends could spend time together and enjoy a glass of Mr Jack’s fine Tennessee Sipping Whiskey.

When you purchased a liquor from Mr Jack’s elegant & reputable establishment you knew where it came from …it was made right down the street. Nobody could rectify or doctor his goods because he ran his own distillery in Lunchburg and stood behind every drop (he was only 5′ 2″ tall). :)

The free tour at the Jack Daniel’s Distillery is very informative, but doesn’t include a tasting. You do get to sniff the whiskey after it went through the charcoal filtering though. Be sure to stop in if you’re ever in the East Tennessee area and pick up your own bottle of Jack Daniels White Rabbit Saloon whiskey.

Jack Daniels White Rabbit Saloon

We hope you will give candle making a try using your own cut Jack Daniel’s bottle! They make great gifts… and remember to share your DIY Show Off’s with us and our readers.

A Bottle Lamp For A Mission Trip Student

Kicking around an idea to incorporate maps into a bottle lamp theme has been floating around in my mind for awhile. When an opportunity came for me to bring the idea to light, I simply couldn’t resist.

Our daughter, Tanya, has been attending the Honor Academy in Garden Valley Texas this last year. She’s nearing completion of her first year and in order to graduate she will need to go on a mission trip. Between volunteering at the call center and attending classes, she has had little time to raise money for the program. We wanted to help and joined in by creating a portal for people to donate money for the cause.

Mission Trip To Baja, Mexico

Once the donation page was set up and running I thought it would be kind of fun to put together something that would act as a kind of keepsake for this life changing event. Armed with a bottle of Mod Podge and some maps that we had collected over the years, I set upon trying to make the whole thing come to life.

Mapped Bottle Lamp

I’m still putting this bottle lamp together and there is a lot of fine details that have yet to be added. The lamp shade will have to be something that has the appearance of luggage or maybe canvas. I will leave the other decorations up to Silke who has a better eye for not only those types of details but also Tanya’s own personal taste.

One of my concerns has been the heat that can build up in the bottle and what will happen to the Mod Podge. I’m going to leave the lights on for awhile before I go any further just to make sure that it doesn’t cause everything to start sliding down the sides. I’ll keep you posted!

It’s been an adventure for everyone and I guess we are all trying different experiences everyday. But isn’t that what keeps life interesting?

Mason Jar Potpourri Warmer

DIY Potpourri Warmer

Step by step instructions on how to make a Mason Jar Potpourri Warmer.

This is a wonderful, home made gift idea for any season!
Are you looking for an inexpensive Christmas gift? Simply use a piece of Holiday, pine cone or winter scene printed fabric for the cover, colorful ribbons and add cinnamon or pine scented potpourri to the jar.

DIY Potpourri Warmer

You will need the following materials to make a Mason Jar Potpourri Warmer:

– A Mason Jar, clean and free of labels

– 1/2 inch Diamond tipped drill bit and power drill – find them here

– 35 Mini Light String

– Potpourri (Learn how to make your own potpourri.)

– A piece of cloth

– A small rubber band

– Rope, raffia or ribbon

Scroll down for easy to follow step by step instructions…

Instructions for a hand made Mason Jar Potpourri Warmer

Instructions for making a Mason Jar Potpourri Warmer:

  • Use the diamond tipped drill bit to make a hole in the back of the Mason Jar. Take a look at our instructional videos if you need help drilling into glass.
  • Insert the light string through the back of the Mason Jar. (If you’re not comfortable drilling glass, you can also run the light string out of the top of the jar. The light string will be secured by the rubber band.)
  • Add potpourri from the top of the jar. It’s best to do this in succession, add a few lights then add some potpourri, more lights, more potpourri until the jar is filled.
  • Cut a piece of cloth to cover the mouth of the jar, approx. 5 inches in diameter. Any cotton fabric will do just fine. Make sure to cut it large enough so the cloth can hang over the sides.
  • Secure the cloth with a rubber band.
  • Cover the rubber band with a piece of rope, colorful raffia or a decorative ribbon.

Plug in your Mason Jar Potpourri Warmer and enjoy as the scent of warming potpourri fills your home.

As the scent fades over time, simply remove the cloth and add  fresh potpourri or dribble a few drops of fragrance oil or essential oils on the cloth.

Lighted potpourri jars are such an easy craft that they make ideal hostess gifts for impromptu holiday gatherings.

Giving a Holiday Potpourri Mason Jar as a gift? Add a few festive ornaments or other seasonal decorations, wrap in cellophane and tie with curly ribbons.

Add your unique touch to make illuminated potpourri holiday jars for gift giving or holiday decorating.

Mason Jar Potpourri Warmers make it easy to infuse a room with holiday ambiance!

Recycled Glass Bottle Plant Holders – Part V

plant growing in a recycled wine bottle

This is the fifth and last article in our Bottle Plant Holder series.

It is the middle of August now and we have been enjoying our bottle plant holders all summer. They turned out to be very low maintenance and brought us much enjoyment and many compliments from our neighbors and people walking around our area, we live only a 1 1/2 blocks from a Walgreens.

The tomato plant is still producing little tomatoes, we harvested about six or seven bright red little tomatoes so far. I’m never quick enough with my camera to take a picture before someone (Nick probably) pops them off and eats them. I kept snipping off the brown leaves on the bottom of the plant, if you take a look at the older Recycled Glass Bottle Plant Holders articles you can see the plant transformation.

The strawberry plant looks about the same as before, we did get one sweet, little strawberry. Guess who ate it? Yup, Nick did. LOL I don’t think strawberries are meant to be grown in a container by themselves. As far as I know strawberry plants grow long roots and spread in the ground, so the older the plant gets the more fruit it will produce.

The Ivy Fern and Vica Vines are growing nicely and we are thinking about bringing them into the house for the winter. I think they would look nice in the kitchen. We have to find a way to hang them above the kitchen sink. If they winter nice, I will take some additional pictures later this year to keep you updated.

This was a fun glass bottle project and we will definitively try this again next spring.

I’m thinking more cherry tomato plants and to forgo the strawberry plants for a better harvest. I’m wondering if onions or potatoes would be able to grow in a bottle. What do you think? Is it worth a try?

Make sure to check out some of our other DIY Projects articles and leave us a comment below.

We love to hear from you.

Recycled Glass Bottle Plant Holders – Part IV

Glass bottle plant holder

This is the fourth article in our Bottle Plant Holders series.

It is the beginning of July and our little plants are starting to produce fruits. How about that? I never really thought we would actually get any tomatoes or strawberries from these plants.

recycled bottle plant holder for strawberries

Our first little strawberry

The strawberry plant in this Black Oak wine bottle has tripled in size. As you can see in the picture we have a ripe berry (there’s a dragonfly hovering around it) and another little flower.

There isn’t enough to make a pie or strawberry jam or anything like that, but it’s fun to see that our experiment actually worked. A few strawberry plants in pretty wine bottles make nice decorations for any backyard or patio.

As an added bonus to growing plants in recycled bottles, you get to pick a ripe berry every now and again, without having to bend over.

Now take a look at the tomato plant in the Champagne bottle. This baby is almost as tall as the bottle, growing straight up. We added more dirt to the bottle about two weeks ago. There are so many roots inside the bottle, we thought for sure this plant was doomed.

Glass bottle plant holder

Our little tomatoes are growing nicely

In the past few weeks we’ve had a lot of rain following by sometimes very humid and other times dry hot days. We try to remember to water our plants every day. Keep in mind, we are not master gardeners by any means of the imagination and we sometimes go on road trips or get busy with projects and forget to water.

We haven’t used any fertilizer or additives or what ever else you might give plants to make them grow better.

What I’m trying to say is, if we can make these plants grow inside glass bottles, so can you.

So, what are you waiting for? Find a cool looking bottle, drill a hole in the bottom, attach a hanger and fill it with dirt. Pick your favorite plant and give it a try.

Don’t want to bother with the drilling? Shop for Bottle Plant Holders in our Etsy shop.
