Sonny’s Metal Art Bottle Crafts

Bottle crafts by Sonny's Metal Art

Showcasing industrial style lamps and a candle holder from discarded objects.

Sonny’s suggestion to fellow crafters is always try doing new stuff. He tells us that he gets most of his supplies on the internet and flea markets.

Before taking a look at the unique bottle lamps and candle holder pictures Sonny sent us for our DIY Show Off page, take a moment to like Sonny’s Metal Art page and check out his craft videos on Facebook.

Most of the bottles Sonny uses in his designs are liquor bottles.

Bottle Lamp DIY Show Off

How did you attach the skull to the base? The skull is held on by drilling a hole in the bottle top and putting in a threaded rod for lamps in the hole. Then I glue a fitting to the top and screw that into a pipe fitting. I find the top that is used in bars for poring liquor works great. You just need to remove the metal spout and insert a threaded lamp rod.

The following dual purpose steam punk lamp is not an old fashion radio like I thought, it’s some kind of electrical tester.

Do you know what kind of tester this is? Leave us a comment below.

And last, but not least, we have a cut bottle candle holder.

Are you interested in learning how to cut your own bottles? Check out our Beer Bottle Cutting 101 article explaining the glass cutting process and tool suggestions.

We appreciate Sonny’s creativity and thank him for allowing us to share his work on our DIY Show Off page.

Crafters Watch Out For Scammers

Tips & Info For Crafters To Watch Out For Scammers

If you are ready to sell your crafts online than you need to be aware that some people are not who they claim to be.

We received this message on our Facebook page from Jessie the other day:

Last month I made a mistake. A girl messaged me about the bottles a few times, ordered 2. I quoted her etc. I sent her a pic and she loved it. Messaged me back immediately all the time. I then sent her my info and said once I received her money order I would ship them out. She said that would be perfect…… that was 2 weeks ago still waiting on the money order.

Messaged her, no response. Good lesson for me. I have never taken an order without a deposit. Now I have 2 Texas Houston bottles ( 1 pink!!!) I will wait another week then list them on Etsy. Like my husband said, it’s my own fault!!

Whether you are making your first sale or been a craft seller long enough, you need to be aware of your buyers. It is important to identify legit from bogus buyers especially when you are a first-timer in business to avoid further conflicts and frustrations.

Here are a few things to look out for when selling your crafts online:

  • If a buyer promises to pay you via a personal or cashiers check, you should be very suspicious
  • The same goes for sellers asking for payment via Money Gram or Western Union, especially if its over your asking price
  • If the deal is too good to be true; then it probably is
  • If you’re not sure the prospective buyer is a scammer, keep asking for more information until you know one way or the other
  • Never give out any of your personal/confidential information
  • Keep your online conversations strictly professional. If you become too chatty, you may unintentionally divulge too much information about yourself
  • Trust your gut instinct, if it feels wrong stop all communications
  • Always have the deposit in hand before starting any custom order crafts

There are many different ways to get ripped off when buying or selling over the internet. The good news is that with a little common sense, most are avoidable.

Now, on a lighter note, here are Jessie’s gorgeous custom made lighted bottles, now available in her Etsy store:

Nothing beats speaking to your customers one-on-one, may it be in person or online. Once you create a personal connection with your potential customers you are less likely to get cheated. Still, its always a good idea to be away of the many different ways you might get scammed.

Valentine’s Day Bottle Craft Inspirations

DIY crafts for Valentine's Day

Bottle craft inspirations and decorating ideas for Valentine’s Day.

This time of year is filled with love, hearts and lots of rose colored ribbons. After the holidays, things usually get a little drab around the house. It doesn’t have to be… let’s celebrate the season of love: Valentine’s Day! This day isn’t just for couples, everyone can enjoy Valentine’s with friends and their family. After all, it’s a day for love in general.

To get you in the mood for love I have collected a few of my favorite Valentine’s Day bottle craft ideas for you. You can find an easy DIY project right here on our own blog – Valentine’s Chalk Board Bottle Lamp

Recycled Bottle Craft For Valentine's Day

Recreate this inexpensive, yet wonderfully unique Valentine’s gift idea!

Flowers will fade, but not this DIY craft. Simply cut the neck off a wine bottle. Paint the outside of the bottle, or leave the wine label intact, fill with twigs or small branches and decorate with hearts and/or ribbons. If you know how to knit you could even make little hearts like the ones in the picture above.

Gift and Decorating Idea for Valentine's

Here is an equally easy decorating idea for Valentine’s Day!

Apply a vinyl letter or icon on the outside of your recycled bottles then use spray paint in your favorite color. White or metallic colors work best. Fill your bottles with a string of lights or LED candle and decorate with twigs. This is perfect for decorating a fireplace mantle, window sill or to place on your steps.

Easy craft ideas for Valentines Day

These chalk board bottles could be a special gift or for your home decor!

Here is an alternate version of our chalk board bottle. If you can’t find the right words, simply use a vinyl heart sticker before spray painting your recycled wine bottle. Then fill the bottle with candy or little treasures and decorate with ribbons, hearts and flowers.

Bottle Lamp For Valentine's Day

A lighted bottle lamp makes the perfect Valentine’s Day gift!

Of course we have to include a lighted bottle lamp in our Valentine’s inspiration lineup. A recycled glass bottle filled with a simple string of lights and some fun Valentine’s decorations make for a gift your loved one will enjoy all year round. It’s perfect for a night light on a dresser or hallway table.

Bill’s Cut Bottle Projects

Mountain Dew Bottle crafting

Over the last couple of weeks Bill has sent us several of his bottle project pictures.

First of all, I would like to apologize to Bill for not posting his pictures sooner. Thank you Bill for following up with us and sending us another picture.

With everything that’s been going on in our lives recently (yes, I admit it, I forgot about his first email in our inbox for a while) we just didn’t find the time. Our daughter recently moved to Colorado, we were more than anxious about her solo 3 day road trip, and we sold our town home in Summerville so we spent a lot of our free time packing and re-organizing.

Alright, enough about us, here are Bill’s bottle project pictures:

Chain Maille Bottle Lamp

hanging bottle lamp with chain maille

New and creative ways abound these days with the Bottle Crafting community.

We received an email from one of our members that shares his enthusiasm for chain maille and bottle crafting:

Hi, I’m Dennis.  A few months ago, I went to the Allentown Art Festival in Buffalo, NY, and I found a wine bottle with the bottom cut off of it.  I thought I might be able to use it in my art (I’ll go into that in a minute), so I bought it.  After ‘inflicting my will’ upon it, I was amazed at what I had wrought, and I looked for ways to improve it.  Lighting it up seemed the obvious answer.  So, I did.  I got a candelabra outlet and bulb, wired it up, and set it off.

I AM SO PROUD, I can’t begin to tell you.

As you can see from the picture, I make chain maille.  This bottle is wrapped in European 4-in-1 maille done in 16g 1/4″ bright aluminum rings, with European 6-in-1 diamonds of 18g 1/4″ anodized aluminum rings.  THIS could be the answer to a question that I saw on your blog, about how to provide a lampshade.

Each wrapping (I’ve done many bottlewrappings in maille, but this is the first that’s lit) is unique, so they really can’t be interchanged…but I was so proud of the results, I knew I had to try again.  So, I recently bought a Kinkajou.  It arrives next week.  I’m really, REALLY looking forward to it.

So, I was looking around online today, and I found your site.  I am DEFINITELY going to be coming back here for advice and such once my cutter gets in.  In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the linked picture (trust me, it’s not nearly as cool as the VIDEO, where you can see the shadow move as the bottle spins a bit), and I look forward to your input.  Have a great weekend!

Take a look at this short video to see the chain maille bottle lamp in action:

Dennis, thank you so much for sharing your awesome DIY creation!

What a wonderful way to combine your love of chain maille by thinking outside the box and creating a unique look for a wine bottle pendent light. Chainmaille (also known as chainmail, or simply maille) is typically armor or jewelry made by connecting metal rings to one another. The word maille derives from the French word maille (mesh), which comes from Latin macula (mesh of a net).

We like your idea of adding chain maille to a lamp shade as well. It will add another dimension and will diffuse and/or reflect the light in unusal ways. Well done, Dennis!
