Industrial Pipe Fitting For Your Bottle Lamp Project

Lamp Pipe Fitting

We have received a lot of really good questions from our readers over the years and this is one that I felt that we just had to share. The question reads:

Hi! I’m trying to make a hanging Jack Daniels bottle lamp. I need to find an adapter to screw the bottle into, then convert it to pipe thread. I see pics of completed projects online, but I can not find that adapter ANYWHERE! Can you help me out, please? Thank you, Joe

Full disclosure – I told Joe in the e-mail that I had never attempted to make one of these particular types of lamps before. We have written a few articles and showcased some artisans that make these types of lamps but never have I actually made one.

How do they do that? – I had sent a few ideas over to Joe and then he came back with a DIY video that explained the whole process. The video was made by Steve Dannenberg and he shows exactly how to make this little dream a reality. The parts listed on his video are:

The first thing that he does is break down the compression conduit. After removing the metal ring from inside he puts the adapter over the top of the glass bottle. Next he places the rubber gasket over the top of the bottle neck. It’s a nice snug fit that will hold the bottle quite nicely. Using the threaded pipe attached to the candelabra socket, he inserts the piece down into the bottle. The height of the insertion is set by the washer and nuts that were placed on the threaded rod. Pulling the adapter up to encompass the rubber gasket, and the light fixture, he begins to screw on the threaded connector. On top of the threaded connector he then adds his pipe reducer.

At this point the wires are sticking out of the top and where you decide to go from there is left up to your own imagination. Or maybe the amount of piping you have or want to use will determine your outcome.

Personal preference – I would like to expand upon Steve’s idea and maybe take it a step further. Instead of leaving the lamp inside a closed bottle, I would score and remove the end of the bottle. This would eliminate having to take the whole thing apart just to change the bulb. The bottle at this point would act more like a sconce and would still offer the same allure of having it attached to the lamp.

We would like to thank Joe for his question and Steve for sharing his idea. If you have any thoughts or comments please leave them in the space below.

The Art Of Glass Bottle Sanding

The Art of glass bottle sanding

When it comes to sanding down your glass bottle projects you will want them to have a nice smooth finish. In the end, having the right tools and a little persistence does pay off.

The project – I wanted to score and sand a SVEDKA bottle for a flower vase. What made this project challenging was the shape of the bottle itself. The base is narrower than the top. Hey, If it were easy, anybody could do it.

The Score – I went with my tried and true bottle cutter by Creator’s. This particular bottle cutter can handle square bottles by setting it on end. Carrying on with this same technique, I simply set the bottle on end and made sure that my rollers were aligned with the center of the bottle so that it would allow me to rotate it evenly on the scoring wheel

This image shows how far away the base of the bottle was from the rollers.
By aligning the rollers to the center I would be able to rotate it evenly.

The Separation – Over the years, I have had to throw away numerous bottles because they didn’t separate properly. From beer bottles that literally broke apart to the some of the larger glass bottles that left a huge broken piece out of a section of the rim. This time was the third outcome that always makes me question whether or not I can salvage it. This outcome involves a perfect separation but will have a small shard still left behind. Ugh.

The Sanding – This bottle isn’t too hard to come by but when you’ve come this far and it is so close to being completed, you really hate to just throw the whole thing away. I had just recently replaced my Saber Tooth Diamond Sanding Pads. With five years of use on them, it was definitely time to trade them in. It is amazing how well they lasted. I’ve salvaged quite a few bottles with them and now the new set was ready to tackle my SVEDKA / flower vase project at full capability.

It was nice to work with the new sanding pads again and it made my job easier. This was a huge jag of glass that needed to be sanded down. As of the writing of this post, I got it to look respectable enough for the pictures but I really want to smooth it down even further so that the end result won’t show any of the glass imperfections.

The end result – Overall, this project came together quite nicely. When you look at the top of the bottle you notice that some edges are thinner than other areas. This inconsistency in the glass thickness is usually what gives you trouble during the scoring and separation process. It’s always good to know that you can still save some of these bottles with a little bit of ‘elbow grease‘ and ‘know how‘.

Up-cycling Glass Bottles Into Egg Holders

Egg Holders from Bottles

With so many glass bottle projects to do it’s often easy to overlook some of the most obvious ones. In fact, this latest endeavor has been staring me in the face every morning for the past several years. The inconspicuous egg holder that gets used on a regular basis was something that could also be incorporated into our bottle crafts projects.

The aspiration – If you have ever really taken the time to look at different wine bottles, then you will have noticed that each one as a varying different sized dimple in the base of the bottle. This dimple, often referred to as a punt, gives the bottle extra structural strength and stability. If you were to score the bottle just above the dimple and then separate it, turned right side up, you would then have a perfect egg holder!

The plan – Find a wine bottles that offered the right size dimple. Too shallow and it wouldn’t stand upright. Not big enough and the egg wouldn’t fit. The right size will keep your egg in the upright position allowing you access to it’s top so that you can enjoy your soft boiled egg properly.

Creator's Bottle Cutter Measure

The execution – Once I had the bottles collected it was time to go to work. For this project I went with my Creator’s Bottle Cutter. Setting the height and locking it in gave me the assurance that both bottles, once scored and separated, would both be the same height.

The final product – These particular bottles both scored and separated nicely. A little light sanding with my Saber Tooth Diamond Sanding Pads gave the edges a nice smooth finish that will make it safe to wash and won’t scratch any table surfaces.

Glass Bottle Cutting System By Creators

Creator's ScoreLab bottle cutter

The Creator’s Team keeps finding new and exiting ways to improve on their glass bottle cutters.

The ScoreLab modular glass bottle cutting system was invented and designed for the beginner, hobbyist, crafter and professional in mind. From plant holders to pendant lamps and even drinking glasses, once you start, you will find project ideas galore.

Creating unique glass bottle projects is a very fun and inexpensive way to up-cycle your favorite glass bottles, and this ScoreLab cutting system makes it easier than ever. Watch our demo video and read our bottle cutter review to learn about the different components and modules for this unique bottle cutting system.

Modular Glass Bottle Cutting System

The Waffle Grid Base:

The cutting system by Creator’s, in its simplest configuration, reflects a high degree of precision. Any product that is of the highest quality begins with a firm and accurate foundation and this Modular Glass Cutting System is no exception.

The foundation is a very sturdy waffle grid surface. Each square within the grid is perfectly positioned in alignment with all the other squares. This creates equal parallel, perpendicular and straight lines. The waffle grid will also catch any shards of glass that may flake off the bottle, keeping your work space clean and neat.

The Ball Bearing Modules:

Each of the ball bearing modules that come with the bottle cutting system are created to fit in perfect alignment with each other in the waffle grid surface.

The ball bearings are rubber coated to protect your glass bottle from being scratched and it keeps your bottle from slipping. Be sure to wipe the rubber off with an old toothbrush or cloth now and again as glass shards can become stuck on them. Sealed ball bearings are used to keep any dirt, dust or glass flakes out of contact with the actual bearings.

Easy to use bottle cutter

The Cutting Head Module:

This module is designed to hold the cutting head in the best position for scoring the glass. The cutting head will stay perfectly straight on the waffle grid surface when engaged for scoring.

An Allen wrench is provided with the ScoreLab Bottle Cutting System for replacing the cutting head or for adjusting the angle. Please not that the alignment and the angle of the cutting wheel in relation to the bearings is on the same plane. The module will tilt slightly back when pressing on the bottle to run the score.

The Back Stop:

The back stop is micro adjustable by turning the ridged knob. This will allow the bottle to be moved back and forth to the desired score location.

The Twist-A-Cap:

The twist-a-cap is a round foam grip that goes over the end of the bottle allowing a more comfortable way to turn the bottle while scoring.

Watch a demo video of the Glass Bottle Cutting System By Creators:

Cutting System Set Up:

Firmly plug the 3 ball bearing modules, the cutting head module and the back stop module into their respective positions on the waffle grid surface.

Adjust the back stop by turning the knob to adjust the location of the desired score line. Newbies should make a mark on the bottle using a fine point Sharpie marker to designate the top of the bottle. This will assure that the bottle is not over-scored when rotating 360 degrees. Never go over a score line twice, doing so will surely ruin the score and possible the cutting wheel.

Executing The Score:

Place the twist-a-cap on the bottle top. Rest the bottle on the assembled modules with the bottom of the bottle against the back stop adjusting wheel. Press down on the bottle and rotate with the top coming towards you.

Scoring the bottle this way, you will see the scoring line coming toward you. As soon as your score line meets with the starting point, a faint click or scratching sound will be heard (see above video). Stop the movement of the bottle immediately so it’s not over scored.

The score should look line a fine line, much like a razor thin line. If the score line ends up dusty and grainy looking you put too much pressure on the bottle. Use less pressure the next time. The finer the score line the better the bottle will separate. It’s a good idea to practice with a few throw away bottles to get a hang of it and be sure to wear the enclosed safety glasses.

The Separating Process:

There are 3 different processes you can use to separate a glass bottle. The Hot/Cold water method, the candle/ice water method and the mini heat gun/ice water method. Each process will work depending on your preferred practice and patience.
