Autumn Leaf Bottle Night Light

We decided to dress up one of our plain 1 liter recycled liquor bottles for the Fall season. We’ve always wanted to try glass frosting and this seemed like the perfect time to give it a whirl.

The frost reflects the cooler temperatures of the season with a combination of fall leaves and orange LED lights. Right now is a great time to pick up seasonal colored LED lights in orange and purple. Nick also grabbed some Fall leaf window clings and attached them to the bottle after drilling the hole in the back.

With the decals in place he stepped outside on our deck and evenly applied the Krylon Glass Frosting all around the bottle. After two coats we felt confident the bottle was adequately covered. We only had to wait about 20 minutes for the glass to dry and then simply peeled the window clings off the bottle to be used again some other time. To give the light string a little bit more volume we attached strips of orange and gold ribbons in between the lights. Now it was just a matter of inserting the light string through the back of the bottle.

In the meantime Silke grabbed a wine cork and began hot gluing the little pumpkin to the top of the cork and attaching layers of ribbons around it. She also added some Fall leaves and a little stick adornment to the cork.

Here is a picture of our finished Autumn Leaf Bottle Night Light:

We are going to experiment with other plain recycled glass bottles we have. We like the frosting effect, especially for the upcoming Holiday season. Nick is already looking for snow flake window clings. :)

Baileys Bottle Pendant Light

Our latest DIY Project is this pendant light made with a recycled Baileys bottle.

After purchasing a Pendant Fitter kit for around $11 we brought it home to make our own pendant light. We wanted to use a fairly heavy Baileys bottle for this project, so we ended up not using the light fixture that came with the kit.

This was our very first pendant light project and we used the kit as a guide to help us assemble the light.

How to make a pendant light
Trying to solder the old light fixture.

Nick took apart the base lamp so he could feed the wires through the bottle. The next step was to drill a hole in the bottle cap and the Baileys bottle itself.

After feeding the wires through the cap and the bottle, Nick attempted to attach the original light fixture. Soldering the wires didn’t work and we didn’t want the bottle to rest on the ceramic base so we ended up doing away with the fixture all together.

Luckily we also purchased a separate light fixture that we used instead. We were able to secure the wires using standard screws. On the top we secured the fixture itself to the pendant cord. This gave us additional support for the weight of the bottle.

We put a bulb in the fixture and attached a plug in cord to test out our new pendant lamp. The result was quite spectacular. Not only did the bottle hold upright, but the light is shining through perfectly to illuminate the valley scene on the bottle label.

Stay tuned, we will be making another pendant light in the near future. Maybe a three string pendant light using a variation of flavored vodka bottles.

Decorated Bottle Light with Copper and Beads

Our latest DIY recycled bottle project is this decorated Bottle Light.

I have been toying with the idea of learning how to bead for a while now, but wasn’t sure how to attach the beads to the bottles.

On a road trip to St. Cloud, MN last weekend we stopped by the Home Depot (and a craft store of course) and found a coil of copper wire at a very reasonable price. Nick actually thinks it was miss-marked, so I’m not telling you how much we paid for it. LOL, I love finding bargains.

Once we got home I couldn’t wait to try out  decorating a bottle with the copper, wire and beads. Nick had drilled a hole in a regular wine bottle for me the day before. The label was a little marred so it was perfect for trial and error. I filled the bottle with a string of 35 mini multi-colored lights.

It took me about 45 minutes to coil the wire and make the little bead hangers, the one in front has a little silver heart at the end. It turned out alright, but the label on the bottle didn’t match with the decorations at all. So we took off the copper, removed the label and replaced the decorations. It still didn’t look right to me so I hot glued several gold colored glass gems in various sizes to the bottle as well.

Here is the finished Bottle Light with copper, beads & glass gem decorations:

I will make a few more bottles similar to this one in the near future and promise to take step by step pictures so you can learn how to do this as well.

Caribou Coffee Growler Bottle Lamp

Did you know that the coffee shops are selling growlers now? A growler is a 64 ounce glass jug with a finger handle and screw on lid, perfect for storing iced coffee, tea or juice.

The other day while in Caribou Coffee, Nick and I noticed the growler they sell. It has the Caribou Coffee logo in their signature blue color and in their true tradition they added clever saying on all three sides.
“Grab a glass and pour it full of ice-cold refreshment. Raise theat glass igh and say “cheers” to those around you.”
“Enjoy among friends or drink the whole bottle yourself, we won’t judge.”
“Have a’nother, have a’nother, have a’nother, have a’nother…”

This bottle lamp smells amazing! It is filled with whole coffee beans that hide the cord running through the growler. The beans signify the containers contents on top of giving it a cool feel (and smell). It’s like having a Caribou Coffee bean dispenser right in your home.

Pink Floyd Wine Bottle Lamp

On an impulse Nick and I went on a little road trip to acquire the perfect wine bottle to turn into a lamp. The Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon Cabernet Sauvignon bottle was waiting for us at a specialty store 60 miles away. Bringing the bottle home, we were more than excited to give it a try. So, our first step was to empty the bottle. Eager as we were, we polished her off the same evening. :)

The next day Nick took the newly empty bottle into the basement and began the lamp making process. The wine is so good, we didn’t even end up with a headache the next day.

With our drill press the hole was created in less than a minute. Nick inserted 50 mini LED lights along with a main cord to run the actual lamp part. A separate on/off switch was added to run the LED lights without the light bulb having to be on. The switch also is nice to have so you don’t have to unplug the lamp when not in use.

Once the lamp kit was assembled, Nick and I hooked up and made our way to find a lamp shade. Sticking with the one-of-a-kind Rock’n Roll mythology theme, we went with a black custom made shade. We attached beads along the bottom of the lamp shade and added glow in the dark stars.

Dark Lamp Shade for the Dark Side of the Moon wine bottle

The finished Pink Floyd Bottle Lamp exceeded our expectations.

This bottle has been sold!

The soft glow from the lamp shade didn’t off set the lights that illuminate the inside of the bottle, and the beads are the perfect finishing touch.

Bottle Crafts with Pink Floyd Bottle

Even after the lamp is turned off, the afterglow of the stars adds a unique touch to this distinct wine bottle lamp.
